What Is Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI)?

Hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) combines compute, storage and virtualisation in one cluster of standard servers, managed from a single console. Instead of separate servers, a storage network and a SAN array, each server (node) adds its own processors, memory and drives to a shared pool.

Fortuna Data supplies HCI on Lenovo ThinkAgile systems for Nutanix, Microsoft Azure Local and VMware vSAN, and helps UK organisations choose and size the right platform.

How hyper-converged infrastructure works

  • Each node is a standard server with its own processors, memory and drives
  • A hypervisor runs on every node and hosts the virtual machines
  • Software pools the drives from all nodes into shared storage, and keeps copies of data on more than one node so the cluster can survive a node failure
  • One console manages virtual machines, storage and updates across the cluster
  • To grow, you add another node

Benefits of HCI

  • Simpler to run – one platform and one console instead of several
  • No separate SAN to buy, connect and manage
  • Grow in steps by adding nodes when you need them
  • Built-in resilience – data is kept on more than one node
  • Fewer components can mean less rack space and fewer support contracts

Thinking about moving to HCI?

Tell us about your servers, storage and virtual machines, and a specialist will recommend the right platform and cluster size.

Drawbacks to consider

  • Compute and storage usually grow together, so if you only need more storage you may still be adding processors and memory
  • Software licences are often charged per node or per core, so check licensing costs as the cluster grows
  • Some very large or specialised storage needs are better suited to a dedicated array
  • HCI is not a backup. Replication and snapshots help you recover from failures, but you still need separate backups. See data protection software

When is HCI a good fit?

  • Virtual machines and business applications
  • Virtual desktops (VDI)
  • Branch offices and edge sites
  • Replacing ageing servers and SAN storage at the same time
  • Moving away from VMware – see Nutanix solutions and the eEVOS hypervisor

HCI FAQs

What is hyper-converged infrastructure?

Hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) combines compute, storage and virtualisation in one cluster of standard servers, managed from a single console.

What is the difference between HCI and a SAN?

A SAN is a separate storage array shared by servers over a storage network. HCI puts the storage inside the servers and pools it across the cluster, so no separate array is needed.

What is the difference between converged and hyper-converged infrastructure?

Converged infrastructure packages separate servers, storage and networking into one pre-tested system. Hyper-converged infrastructure goes further and runs storage as software on the servers themselves.

Is HCI a backup?

No. HCI keeps copies of data on more than one node to survive failures, but you still need separate backups to recover from deletion, corruption or ransomware.

Which HCI platform should I choose?

It mainly depends on the software you want to run: Nutanix, Microsoft Azure Local or VMware vSAN. See Lenovo ThinkAgile or contact us for advice.

How much does HCI cost?

It depends on the platform, number of nodes, hardware and licences. Contact us with your requirements and we will provide a quote.
