Data Protection Software for Business

Data protection software backs up your business data and gets it back quickly after a deletion, hardware failure or ransomware attack. The right tool depends on what you need to protect: servers and virtual machines, Microsoft 365 and other SaaS apps, or staff laptops. Fortuna Data supplies and supports leading data protection software for UK businesses, and we'll help you pick the right fit.

What do you need to protect?

Servers, virtual machines and databases

Your core systems: VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix or Proxmox virtual machines, physical Windows and Linux servers, and applications such as SQL Server, Active Directory, Exchange and Oracle. Look for immutable backups (copies that can't be changed or deleted), fast granular restore, and disaster recovery you can test.

Software we supply: NAKIVO Backup & Replication, HYCU.

Microsoft 365 and SaaS applications

Microsoft keeps Microsoft 365 running, but protecting your data inside it is your responsibility. Deleted mailboxes, overwritten files and ransomware can all spread into OneDrive and SharePoint. A separate backup, stored outside Microsoft, lets you restore independently.

Software we supply: Keepit, HYCU, NAKIVO (Microsoft 365).

Laptops and desktops (endpoints)

Staff often save work to their desktop or Documents folder, not the shared drive. If a laptop is lost, stolen or fails, that data is gone. Endpoint backup protects files on Windows and Mac devices automatically, and can wipe a lost laptop remotely.

Software we supply: Cibecs Endpoint Cloud.

What to look for in data protection software

  • Immutable backups: ransomware can't encrypt or delete them.
  • A copy off-site or in the cloud: so one incident can't take out both your data and your backup.
  • Fast, granular restore: get back one file or email, not just the whole server.
  • Tested recovery: a backup you've never restored is a guess.
  • Central management and reporting: see at a glance what's protected and what failed.
  • Compliance: UK GDPR (Article 32) expects organisations to be able to restore access to personal data in a timely manner after an incident.

Frequently asked questions

What is data protection software?

Software that backs up business data and restores it after deletion, hardware failure, ransomware or a disaster. It usually covers servers, virtual machines, applications, SaaS apps like Microsoft 365, and sometimes laptops.

What's the difference between backup and data protection?

Backup is making copies of data. Data protection is wider: backup plus fast recovery, ransomware resilience (such as immutable copies), disaster recovery and reporting.

Does Microsoft 365 need a separate backup?

Microsoft is responsible for keeping the service running; your data within it is your responsibility. A third-party backup such as Keepit, HYCU or NAKIVO keeps an independent copy outside Microsoft that you can restore from.

Which data protection software is right for my business?

It depends on what you run: virtual machines, physical servers, Microsoft 365, laptops, or a mix. Tell us what you need to protect and we'll recommend the right fit.

Can you protect staff laptops as well as servers?

Yes. Cibecs Endpoint Cloud backs up Windows and Mac laptops and desktops automatically, and NAKIVO can also protect workstations.
