The Exos EX4U74 is one of Seagate's newest additions to the SCALE family, built on SAS-4 architecture rather than the SAS-3 platform behind the EX2U12, EX2U24 and EX5U84. It's designed specifically for standard-depth edge racks — where the closely related DC4U100 pushes for maximum density in a full-depth data centre chassis, the EX4U74 is built to fit into more space-constrained deployments while still delivering multi-petabyte capacity.
Like the rest of the SCALE range it remains a pure JBOD expansion enclosure — connecting directly to a host server or storage controller — but this generation adds meaningful platform-level improvements around throughput, power efficiency and drive longevity.
The EX4U74's standout feature is architectural: it's a genuine platform generation ahead of the earlier SCALE enclosures, built on SAS-4 rather than SAS-3, which roughly doubles the available throughput for ingest and retrieval on data-intensive workloads. That matters increasingly for AI training pipelines, frequent checkpointing and continuous data ingestion, where the storage layer needs to keep pace with compute.
It's also Mozaic-ready — designed to support both current-generation and Seagate's next generation of higher-capacity drives without requiring a re-architecture, which protects your infrastructure investment as drive technology moves forward. Vibration mitigation engineering reduces mechanical resonance and acoustic interference between closely packed drives, helping maintain consistent performance and drive longevity in a dense 74-bay chassis.
Because it's built to a standard rack depth rather than the deeper, maximum-density DC4U100 chassis, the EX4U74 is the more practical choice where physical rack space or existing cabinet depth is a constraint — edge locations and standard data centre racks in particular.
