If you've spent any time around enterprise IT recently, you've probably heard the term "hyperconverged infrastructure" thrown around — usually shortened to HCI. It's one of those pieces of jargon that sounds more complicated than it actually is. Here's what it really means, why it's caught on, and where it does (and doesn't) make sense.
Traditional data centre infrastructure is built in silos. You've got your servers over here, handling compute. Your storage arrays over there, on their own network, with their own management console. Your networking gear somewhere else entirely. Each piece comes from a different vendor, runs its own firmware, and needs its own specialist to keep it running properly.
That's not a design flaw exactly — it's just how data centres evolved, one purchase at a time, over decades. But it creates a real cost: every new project means coordinating compute, storage, and networking separately, and every IT team ends up needing broader expertise than they'd probably like, just to keep the lights on.
Hyperconverged infrastructure collapses those silos into one system. Compute, storage, and virtualisation software all run on the same standard server hardware, managed through a single interface, instead of three separate systems that happen to talk to each other. Add another node to the cluster, and you're scaling compute and storage together, rather than juggling separate upgrade paths for each.
It's not a new idea in concept — the same principle vendors like Nutanix, VMware, and Microsoft have each built a version of — but it's matured a lot over the past several years, to the point where it's now a genuinely mainstream choice for mid-sized and enterprise IT teams, not just a niche one.

HCI tends to be a strong fit where infrastructure simplicity and predictable scaling matter more than squeezing out every last drop of specialised performance — think virtual desktop environments, general-purpose virtualisation, remote and branch office deployments, and mid-sized data centres that don't want to run a specialist storage team.
It's less of an obvious fit where a workload has very specific, extreme performance requirements that benefit from dedicated, purpose-built storage hardware tuned to exactly that job — though even there, the gap has narrowed considerably as HCI platforms have matured.
In practice, the decision usually isn't "should we use HCI" so much as "which HCI platform fits the hypervisor ecosystem we're already running, or want to standardise on." The three major options — Nutanix, Microsoft's Azure Local, and VMware's vSAN — each integrate with certified server hardware from vendors like Lenovo, but the right choice depends entirely on what your team already knows and what you're trying to standardise around.

HCI isn't a magic fix, and it's worth saying so plainly. You're trading some of the flexibility of picking best-in-class hardware for each layer individually, in exchange for simplicity and easier management. For a lot of organisations, that trade is clearly worth it. For a handful with very specific, extreme requirements, it isn't — and that's a conversation worth having honestly before committing to a platform.
