IBM Diamondback Tape Library

Ultra-High Density Tape Storage for Petabyte and Exabyte-Scale Archive

Inside the IBM Diamondback Tape Library

The IBM Diamondback Tape Library is IBM's next-generation, ultra-high density tape platform, designed for hyperscale and enterprise data centres facing petabyte and exabyte-scale archive demands. Built on a standard Open Compute Project (OCP) rack footprint and populated with LTO Ultrium drives, Diamondback delivers the industry's highest tape density from IBM to date, with a design focus on rapid deployment, low operational overhead and long-term cost efficiency.

Key Features

  • Ultra-high density — up to 46.4PB native (up to 116.1PB with 2.5:1 compression) in a single library frame using LTO-10 cartridges, in a standard OCP rack footprint.
  • Up to 14 tape drives per frame — supporting LTO Ultrium drives and media for high-throughput archive workloads.
  • Rapid deployment — can ship fully loaded with tape media pre-installed, cutting installation time significantly versus traditional library rollouts.
  • Scale-out via RAIL — deploy as a stand-alone library or as part of a Redundant Array of Independent Libraries (RAIL), adding independent frames as capacity needs grow.
  • Self-serviceable design — Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) mean most parts can be swapped in minutes, reducing reliance on onsite IBM service.
  • True air-gap and WORM support — physically isolated from primary storage systems, with tape-drive encryption and Write-Once, Read-Many media for regulatory compliance.
  • Optional integrated climate control — a climate-controlled model with a built-in air conditioner enables deployment in warmer, non-traditional data centre environments.

Why Choose Diamondback

Diamondback is purpose-built for organisations dealing with genuinely large-scale archive requirements — hyperscale cloud providers, large enterprises, and any organisation whose unstructured data footprint has outgrown what a traditional tape library can economically support. Its density and RAIL scale-out design mean you can grow capacity by adding independent frames rather than re-architecting an existing library, and its self-service maintenance model is designed to reduce the number of people who need physical access to your most sensitive infrastructure.

It's worth noting that Diamondback isn't a straight replacement for IBM's TS4500 — the TS4500 offers more flexibility in supported drive types and remains the better choice for general-purpose, "lights out" data centre deployments. Diamondback is the better fit specifically where you need very high-performance, very large-scale archival density, or where minimising onsite vendor maintenance is a priority.

Common Use Cases

  • Hyperscale and cloud archive — cost-efficient, ultra-dense capacity for web-scale unstructured data growth.
  • AI and analytics data lakes — a low-cost, air-gapped tier for retaining vast unstructured datasets.
  • Cyber-resilient backup — a genuinely offline, immutable archive tier that protects against ransomware and insider threats.
  • Sustainability-driven storage strategy — a lower power and carbon footprint than equivalent-capacity disk storage.
