What is LTO Tape Technology?

Linear Tape-Open (LTO) is an open-standard magnetic tape storage technology developed jointly by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM, and Quantum — the LTO Consortium. It was introduced in 2000 as an open alternative to the proprietary tape formats that dominated the market at the time, and has since become the best-selling enterprise tape format in the world.

LTO tape stores digital data on magnetic tape cartridges at exceptionally low cost per terabyte. Data is written to and read from tape using an LTO tape drive, which can be a standalone unit or housed inside a tape library — an automated system capable of managing hundreds or thousands of cartridges without manual intervention.

Unlike disk or flash storage, LTO tape provides a true air gap — when a cartridge is removed from the drive, it is physically isolated from any network. This makes tape the most reliable defence against ransomware attacks that target backup infrastructure.

LTO Generations — From LTO-1 to LTO-10

LTO technology has advanced through ten generations since its introduction, roughly doubling capacity with each generation. The roadmap provides enterprise buyers with long-term planning certainty — a critical factor when investing in archival infrastructure.

Generation Native Capacity Compressed Transfer Speed Released
LTO-1100 GB200 GB20 MB/s2000
LTO-2200 GB400 GB40 MB/s2003
LTO-3400 GB800 GB80 MB/s2005
LTO-4800 GB1.6 TB120 MB/s2007
LTO-51.5 TB3 TB140 MB/s2010
LTO-62.5 TB6.25 TB160 MB/s2012
LTO-76 TB15 TB300 MB/s2015
LTO-812 TB30 TB360 MB/s2017
LTO-918 TB45 TB400 MB/s2021
LTO-1030 TB75 TB400 MB/s native2025

LTO drives support read and write for the current generation and read-only for one generation back. An LTO-10 drive can read LTO-9 and LTO-10 cartridges, and write to both. This backward compatibility policy gives organisations a clear migration path when upgrading drives.

Key Features of LTO Tape

WORM — Write Once Read Many

LTO WORM cartridges cannot be overwritten once data is written. Mandatory for compliance environments requiring immutable audit trails — financial services, healthcare, legal.

Hardware encryption

AES 256-bit hardware encryption built into LTO-4 and later drives. Data is encrypted on the cartridge without any performance penalty, protecting data at rest from physical theft.

LTFS — Linear Tape File System

Introduced with LTO-5, LTFS allows tape to be accessed like a USB drive — drag-and-drop file access without specialist software. Significantly simplifies tape management.

Air-gap security

Ejected tape cartridges are physically isolated from any network. Ransomware cannot reach offline tape — making tape the gold standard for ransomware-resilient backup.

30-year archive life

LTO media is rated for 30 years under correct storage conditions. Significantly longer than disk or flash — critical for regulatory retention and long-term archival.

Low power consumption

Tape consumes power only during read/write operations. Petabytes of data stored on tape use a fraction of the energy of equivalent disk or cloud storage — measurable cost and carbon savings.

LTO Tape vs Cloud Storage

For long-term archival workloads, LTO tape is significantly cheaper than cloud object storage. At LTO-9 pricing, tape storage costs approximately £4 per terabyte — cloud archival storage in UK data centres costs £15–25 per terabyte per year. For a 100TB archive retained for five years, the cost difference runs into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Beyond cost, tape offers advantages cloud cannot match: no egress charges when retrieving data, no ongoing subscription cost, complete data sovereignty, and physical air-gap protection against ransomware. For cold archival data that is rarely accessed but must be retained for years, tape is the most cost-effective and secure option available.

LTO Tape Libraries for UK Enterprises

For organisations managing large tape estates, a tape library automates cartridge handling — eliminating manual cartridge swapping and enabling unattended backup and archival operations. Libraries range from entry-level units holding a dozen cartridges to enterprise systems capable of managing thousands of cartridges across multiple drives.

Fortuna Data is a Qualstar reseller — supplying and supporting LTO tape libraries for UK enterprises. Qualstar libraries are designed for high-capacity, high-reliability environments and are used extensively in media and entertainment, financial services, healthcare, and research organisations.

The IBM TS4500 is one of the most widely deployed enterprise tape libraries in the UK — capable of holding up to 12,006 cartridges and supporting up to 96 LTO drives. For mid-market organisations, the IBM TS2900 and TS4300 offer excellent capacity-to-cost ratios.

LTO Tape for Ransomware Protection

Ransomware attacks increasingly target backup infrastructure before triggering encryption of live data. If backups are connected to the network — even backup servers with restricted access — sophisticated ransomware can reach and encrypt them, leaving organisations with no clean copy to restore from.

LTO tape provides the ultimate protection because ejected cartridges are completely offline. An attacker with full administrative access to your network cannot reach data on a tape sitting in a library slot — it is physically isolated. This is why security frameworks including NCSC guidance and the 3-2-1-1 backup rule specifically recommend including an air-gapped or immutable copy in any backup strategy.

For UK organisations in regulated sectors — financial services, healthcare, legal — tape also satisfies requirements for immutable data retention through WORM cartridges, providing both ransomware protection and compliance evidence in a single technology.
