For years, LTO tape had a predictable rule: each new drive generation could read back two generations and write back one. That's why an LTO-9 drive can still read and write LTO-8 media. It's the reason so many organisations have been able to keep expanding their tape archive onto newer, cheaper-per-terabyte media without a wholesale migration every time a new generation arrived.

LTO-10 changes that completely. According to the official LTO Program specification and confirmed directly by IBM's own documentation, LTO-10 drives can only read and write LTO-10 media — they cannot read LTO-9 tapes, and they certainly can't read LTO-8. If your archive is sitting on LTO-8 (or earlier) cartridges and you want to move to LTO-10 hardware, you can't simply load an old tape into the new drive and expect it to work.

That means an LTO-9 drive is the last generation that can still touch LTO-8 media directly. Why Migrate?

  • Retiring old drive hardware — maintaining a working LTO-8 or LTO-9 drive indefinitely, just to keep old archives readable, has its own cost and risk.
  • Compliance and legal access — if archived data needs to remain retrievable for regulatory reasons, it needs to stay on media your current hardware can actually read.
