For years, LTO tape had a predictable rule: each new drive generation could read back two generations and write back one. That's why an LTO-9 drive can still read and write LTO-8 media. LTO-10 changes that completely. According to the official LTO Program specification and confirmed directly by IBM's own documentation, LTO-10 drives can only read and write LTO-10 media — they cannot read LTO-9 tapes, and they certainly can't read LTO-8. If your archive is sitting on LTO-8 (or earlier) cartridges and you want to move to LTO-10 hardware, you can't simply load an old tape into the new drive and expect it to work.
