Overview

The QNAP TVS-H874 is an 8-bay tower NAS built for demanding business workloads that require both reliable storage and genuine computing performance. Powered by 12th Generation Intel Core processors — combining Performance-cores and Efficient-cores in Intel's Hybrid Architecture — the TVS-H874 handles concurrent file serving, virtual machine hosting, and application workloads without the compromises typical of NAS devices in this class.

Three processor variants cover a range of requirements, from the six-core i5 model for file serving and backup through to the 16-core i9 variant with pre-installed 10GbE for environments running multiple virtual machines or high-throughput video workflows. All models run QNAP's QuTS hero operating system, built on the ZFS filesystem, and include PCIe Gen 4 expansion capability for future network or storage upgrades.

QuTS Hero and ZFS: The Foundation for Data Integrity

The TVS-H874 runs on QNAP's QuTS hero operating system, which is built on ZFS — a filesystem originally developed for enterprise storage environments and designed from the ground up for data integrity at scale. Unlike traditional filesystems, ZFS continuously checksums all data and metadata. When a read operation detects a mismatch between stored data and its checksum, ZFS automatically repairs the corruption using data from a mirrored or parity copy before returning the data to the user. This self-healing behaviour operates transparently, without manual intervention.

For organisations managing long-lived data — construction project archives, media production libraries, legal records — silent data corruption is a genuine risk that RAID alone does not address. RAID protects against drive failure; it does not detect or correct data that has been silently corrupted on a functioning drive. ZFS addresses both.

QuTS hero also supports block-level inline data deduplication and compression, which can significantly reduce the storage footprint for datasets with repeated content, alongside near-limitless snapshots and real-time SnapSync replication to a secondary unit for local redundancy.

Recommended for Media and Entertainment

The TVS-H874 is validated for use in collaborative editing environments using Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. The Intel UHD Graphics built into the processor support transcoding acceleration, and the PCIe expansion slot can accommodate an entry-level GPU for more demanding video tasks. For production teams managing multi-year media libraries, the ZFS self-healing filesystem provides protection against silent data corruption — a risk that becomes more significant as archive lifespans grow.

PCIe Gen 4 Expandability

The TVS-H874 includes two PCIe expansion slots: one PCIe Gen 4 x16 slot and one PCIe Gen 4 x4 slot. PCIe Gen 4 delivers up to twice the bandwidth of Gen 3, which is particularly relevant when adding 25GbE networking cards or M.2 SSD expansion cards where throughput directly affects system performance.

Supported expansion cards include 2.5GbE, 10GbE, and 25GbE network adapters; QM2 cards for additional M.2 NVMe SSD slots; Fibre Channel adapters; and entry-level graphics cards (limited to cards that can be powered solely through the PCIe slot). This means the TVS-H874 can be deployed initially with 2.5GbE connectivity and upgraded to 10GbE or 25GbE as network infrastructure evolves, without replacing the unit.

Virtualisation and Container Hosting

The Intel Core multi-core processors in the TVS-H874 provide practical virtualisation capability through QNAP's built-in Virtualisation Station. Virtual machines run directly on the NAS using standard ISO images, with no additional hypervisor licensing required. The 12th Generation Intel Hybrid Architecture — combining Performance-cores for demanding tasks with Efficient-cores for background workloads — enables VM hosting alongside concurrent file serving without significant degradation in either.

Container support is also included via Docker and LXD. For organisations evaluating alternatives to VMware following the Broadcom acquisition and associated licensing changes, the TVS-H874 represents a cost-effective route to on-premise VM hosting without dedicated server hardware.

Immutable Storage and Backup

The TVS-H874 running QuTS hero supports WORM (Write Once, Read Many) immutable volumes and Q Objects, QNAP's S3-compatible object storage implementation running directly on the NAS. These capabilities enable an on-premise immutable backup destination — data that, once written, cannot be modified, deleted, or encrypted by ransomware during the immutability retention period.

QNAP is one of a limited number of NAS vendors to have passed the immutable storage validation requirements for Veeam Backup and Replication version 12. This makes the TVS-H874 a validated on-premise Veeam immutable backup target, without requiring a cloud-hosted S3 endpoint.

Supported RAID configurations include RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60, as well as JBOD and Single. The ZFS filesystem provides a further layer of protection through continuous checksum verification independent of the RAID configuration.

Networking

The i5 and i7 models ship with two 2.5GbE RJ45 ports as standard, with port trunking and failover support. The i9 model (TVS-h874X-i9-64G) ships with a dual-port 10GBASE-T network card pre-installed in the PCIe Gen 4 x4 slot, providing two 10GbE ports in addition to the two 2.5GbE ports. All models can be upgraded to 10GbE or 25GbE connectivity via the PCIe expansion slots using QNAP's range of compatible network cards.

Storage Expansion

The eight front-accessible drive bays support 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA hard drives and SSDs via the hot-swap trays. The two M.2 PCIe Gen 4 x4 slots support M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs for SSD caching — accelerating read and write performance for the HDD array — or as dedicated SSD storage pools. For organisations requiring additional capacity beyond the eight bays, QNAP expansion enclosures can be connected via a compatible HBA expansion card.
